Our Story

Our story began on June 8th, 2006.  I was 30 weeks pregnant (not due until August 16), when I went in to labor.  Thanks to the incompetency of the ER doctor, my labor pains were mistaken as a kidney infection.  However, once admitted into the hospital, a wonderful nurse properly diagnosed my condition, and gave me the proper drugs to temporarily stop my labor.  I was airlifted to Sioux Falls where our little boy, Cole, was born June 10th.  He weighed 4 pounds 2 ounces and spent 5 weeks in the NICU growing bigger and stronger until he was able to come home.  He was in a cranial remolding helmet for about a month last winter and was receiving physical therapy for delays in his gross motor skills.  Now his head looks great and he is no longer receiving PT.  In August ‘07 he underwent a cardiac catheter procedure to fix an open duct in his heart.  He is doing great now and keeps us very busy.

On July 14th our son, Tate, joined the family.  He too was early, born at 34 weeks 3 days.  His birth, like his brothers was a complete shock.  We went to the hospital early Saturday morning due to back pain and bleeding.  They got the contractions stopped and I was put on bed rest.  We were all expecting a long hospital stay.  Tate had other ideas.  My contractions started again Sunday night.  Tate was born on Monday, July 14th.  He was approximately 5 and a half pounds (they didn’t weight him until 10 hours later and he had an IV in).  His hospital stay was short, at 4 days.  He is now home doing fine.

  • Hello,

I came across your blog and think it is wonderful. My sister and I run The Christopher Joseph Concha Foundation a 501(c)(3) organization that helps to spread awareness about premature birth as well as support NICU parents. We distribute a quarterly newsletter to hospitals across the US, if you ever have a suggestions as to an idea or topic you think NICU/preemie parents may benefit from, please let me know.
